About this exhibition

I met MAKERS SPACE in the summer of 2021 at my solo exhibition called “SELFY”.

The title of this exhibition, “Stay Pixelated”, is a catchphrase that indicates MAKERS SPACE himself. The words “Stay Pixelated” shows how the modern world is pixelated through SNS. The expression “Pixelated” refers to “a state in which a small square or rectangular flat area is generated on the screen due to a defect or insufficient bit rate in a digital moving image or the like.” So “Stay Pixelated” tells us that it’s going to be a bit buggy, like a video data with insufficient bitrates. Just as digital data produces unpredictable block noise, we sometimes lack something, get emotional, and act irrationally. MAKERS SPACE positively affirmed these irrational feelings and seemed to replace them with funny pop images or bright colors.

MAKERS SPACE and my concept were in agreement in the sense that SNS-like digital and analog draw an ambiguous world view. The collaboration flow went so smooth. MAKERS SPACE and my visuals were as easy as connecting the last two remaining puzzles. When we projected both our works on a custom canvas in my studio and did a simple simulation, I was convinced that we could definitely make a “crazy” work which will blow peoples mind!! . We both kept repeating the words “yabai yabai yabai”.

First of all, I made the paintings with stencils and airbrushes as usual, and then sent the pieces to MAKERS SPACE studio. Where MAKERS SPACE customized the works with craftsmanship, carefully painted the pixels one by one, and completed four beautiful collaborative works.

These collaborative works express the vague connection between digital and the real world from both abstract and concrete methods. For the past few years the speed with which social media has reached and we don’t know what’s right or what’s actual reality but these artworks create a huge new meaning to it and make all those look as real as it is. “Stay Pixelated” may be a magic word to enjoy the error. Bitrates are always inadequate in our world, causing block noise in someone’s palm on a smartphone. According to Nick Bostrom’s simulation hypothesis, our world exists in simulated reality like The Matrix. I’m not sure if it’s true, but if it’s true. Our world sometimes lacks bitrates, and colorful pixels may be flooding the world.

Makers Space

Makers Space

“Stay pixelated”

Makers Space finds his inspiration in his pixels with strong colours, this results in simple but sophisticated works. Each tone mixes in a certain rhythm, combining prosaic and complicated forms. He illustrates the ordinary aspect of the world in an atypical way.

Makers Space’s work started on social media where his “Pixelation” photo series featured people becoming pixelated – this shed light on a current issue, namely the overexposure of our lives, which we nevertheless wish to be private: by being pixelated.

He himself wishes to be hidden and pixelated as the identity or name is not important at all, just the work done and how it affects other humans.

Today, his pixelated vision of the world is exported to canvases and sculptures.
