この度SH GALLERYでは作家・Jeah Hyuck（ジア・ヒョク）の個展「念想」を開催いたします。
今回の展示は、作家ジア・ヒョクにとって日本で開催される初の個展であり、作家の代表的な連作〈念想〉シリーズの拡張を中心に構成されています。〈念想〉は、日常の中でふと通り過ぎていく感情や記憶、思考の断片を文字として繰り返し記録していく作品です。画面上の文字は、読むための言語であると同時に一つのイメージともなり、遠くから見ると抽象的な風景のように、近くで見ると個人の記憶を呼び起こす痕跡として立ち現れます。
本展で作家は、韓紙、漆、墨、玉粉、石彩といった韓国の伝統素材を用いながら、同時代の韓国美術における新たな可能性を提示しています。伝統を固定された形式としてではなく、現代の感覚の中で変化し続けるものとして捉え、文字の重なりや反復的な行為を通して、現代社会における個人の感情やアイデンティティを視覚化しています。
作品の中でそれぞれの記憶や感情を見出し、無数の言葉が織りなす新たな伝統と崇高の美学の中で、忘れていた感情を再び思い起こし、静かな慰めの時間を体験していただけます。
＜Artist statement＞
私たちは、情報や感情、言語が絶えず流れ込む現代社会の中で生きている。個人はその流れの中で社会と関係を結び、ときに同化しながら、自らの気質やアイデンティティを絶えず形成し変化させていく。私はその過程で通り過ぎていく観念や記憶、感情の痕跡を観察者の視線で捉え、画面上に幾重にも積み重ねながら一つのイメージとして構築している。
私の作品において文字は、読むための言語であると同時にイメージでもある。言葉は明確な物語から離れ、リズムや密度、残像として残り、作品は遠くから見ると抽象的な風景のように見え、近づくことで文字の痕跡が現れる。鑑賞者はその中で特定の言葉を見出した瞬間、自身の記憶や経験を介在させ、もう一人の観察者となる。作品はそのようにして、作家の記録を超え、それぞれの解釈が留まる開かれた場へと拡張されていく。
私はこのプロセスを通して、「変化する伝統性」を探求している。朝鮮時代の風俗画や風景画が当時の社会や自然を記録していたように、私は現代における目に見えない情報や感情、言語の流れを、文字の重なりという方法によって記録する。石彩、墨、韓紙、玉粉、漆といった伝統素材は、作品の中で現代的な感覚として再解釈され、社会の見えない構造を新たなリズムと生命力を持つ同時代の風景へと変換していく。それは、今日の社会や感情、言語の流れを記録する同時代的な風俗画であり、変化し続ける伝統性を探求する試みである。

This exhibition at SH Gallery marks Jeah Hyuck’s first Japan solo exhibition and is centred on the expansion of his major series, Daydream. Daydream is a body of work in which fragments of emotions, memories, and thoughts that pass through everyday life are repeatedly recorded through text. The words on the surface function both as readable language and as visual images. From a distance, they appear as abstract pattern, while up close, they emerge as traces that evoke personal memories.
In this exhibition, the artist presents new possibilities for contemporary art through traditional Korean materials such as Hanji (Korean traditional material), ottchil lacquer, Mukk (traditional coloured ink), pearl powder, and mineral pigments. Rather than understanding tradition as a fixed form, Jeah Hyuck approaches it as something that continues to change through the senses of the present. Through text, layering, and repetitive gestures, he visualises the emotions and identities of individuals living within contemporary society. Viewers are invited to discover their own memories and emotions within the works, recalling forgotten feelings through an aesthetic of sublimity and New-tradition.
<Artist statement>
We live within an endless flow of information, emotion, and language. Within the flow, individuals interact with society and at times assimilate into it, while their temperament and identity are continuously shaped and transformed. From the perspective of an observer, I capture these passing traces and layer them on the surface.
My work moves between language and image. Words shed their narrative function and become rhythm, density, and residue. From a distance, the painting appears as an abstract landscape or pattern, yet as one moves closer, traces of words and letters begin to emerge. In this moment, the viewer also becomes another observer, entering the work through their own memories, experiences, and senses.
Through this process, I explore “New-tradition.” The surface becomes a contemporary landscape where the invisible structures of society are translated into visible traces. By reinterpreting text and traditional painting through a contemporary sensibility, my work becomes a new form of landscape painting—one that records not only visible scenery, but also the invisible flows of information, memory, and emotion today.

ジア・ヒョクは、1997年生まれの若手アーティスト。
英国ロンドンの名門・ゴールドスミス大学でファインアートを専攻し、優秀な成績で卒業。現在はヨーロッパと韓国を拠点に、精力的な展示活動を行っている。
アイデンティティを主題とした作品では、木製の扉や韓紙、絵の具、墨など、東西の異素材を重ね合わせ、落書きのように重層的な視覚表現を通じて、社会的ペルソナと内面に潜む感情を描き出す。
パリ、ヴェネツィア、ロンドンなどで招待個展を開催し、とくにロンドンのSaatchi GalleryやSurface Galleryでの展示では、世界中のコレクター達から注目を集めていた。
Jeah Hyuck, born in 1997, is a young artist who graduated with honors from Goldsmiths, University of London, a renowned art school, where he majored in Fine Art. Currently, he is actively involved in exhibitions in both Europe and Korea. Jeah Hyuck often focuses on the theme of identity in his works, expressing the social persona of contemporary individuals and the repressed emotions within, using new materials and innovative techniques. The visual outcome, created by combining seemingly disparate materials from both Eastern and Western traditions—such as wooden doors, Hanji (Korean paper), paint, and ink—becomes a layered, graffiti-like structure, offering viewers a window into their own inner explorations. Upon graduation, Jeah Hyuck held solo exhibitions in various galleries, including in Paris, Venice, and London, gaining attention from collectors, especially for his solo shows at Saatchi Gallery and Surface Gallery in London. Jeah Hyuck is an artist who continues to be closely watched, and his future work is eagerly anticipated.
