AL DIAZ（アル・ディアス）について
AL DIAZは、1970年代ニューヨークのグラフィティ・シーンを切り拓いた第一世代のグラフィティ・アーティストであり、伝説的アーティスト、ジャン＝ミシェル・バスキアとともに活動したグラフィティ・プロジェクト SAMO© の共同制作者として広く知られるアメリカのアーティストです。

AL DIAZは1971年、12歳のときに従兄であるギルベルト・“SIETE”・ディアスの影響を受け、急成長していたニューヨークのグラフィティ・カルチャーに触れました。SIETEが住んでいたワシントン・ハイツは当時グラフィティの重要拠点であり、AL DIAZはそこで、ニックネームと番号を組み合わせる伝統的なグラフィティのスタイルを学びます。爆発的な性格にちなんで、彼は「BOMB-1」という名でタグを書いていました。

その後、ロウアー・イースト・サイドに戻ったAL DIAZは、学校を抜け出してグラフィティに没頭するようになり、高校を離れてブルックリン・ハイツにあるオルタナティブスクール「City-As-School」に通うことになります。この時期、共通の友人宅でジャン＝ミシェル・バスキアと出会い、二人は親交を深め、やがて内輪のジョークとして「SAMO©」のコンセプトを考案しました。

SAMO©について
SAMO©とは「Same Old Shit（いつも同じくだらないもの）」の略であり、当時の主流文化、宗教、政治体制に対する冷笑的かつ反抗的な態度を内包していました。
SAMO©が次第にアート界から注目を集める中、1979年、両者の芸術的方向性の違いによりプロジェクトは終焉を迎え、ニューヨークの街には「SAMO IS DEAD」という言葉が残されました。

AL DIAZは言語と文字を扱う卓越した感覚を持ち、タイポグラフィを発展させながら独自の表現世界を構築してきました。2016年頃からは再び「SAMO©」のタグを用い、現代的文脈におけるストリートアートとしてその思想を更新し続けています。

SAMO©タグの再始動（2016年〜）
2016年の米大統領選前後から、AL DIAZは一時中断していたSAMO©のタグを再び使用し始めました。過去の哲学的文言を、現代社会の政治的混乱、消費主義、文化的腐敗への批評として更新し、「空虚な政治、洗脳的な宗教、偽りの哲学への終焉」という初期のメッセージを21世紀へと拡張しています。

「WET PAINT」シリーズとアナグラム（2015年〜）
ニューヨーク地下鉄で見られる「WET PAINT」標識の文字を切り取り、再構成するコラージュ作品を継続的に制作。ユーモラスで皮肉的、時に詩的なアナグラム表現によって、制度化された言語の意味を転倒させています。代表作に “Because War is just a 3 Letter Word”（2019）、“Tolerate Civilization”（2019） などがあります。

立体・幾何学的表現への展開（2020年代〜）
近年は平面作品に加え、「神聖幾何学（Sacred Geometry）」に着想を得た立体作品にも取り組んでいます。三角形や円、四角形などの幾何学形態に、赤・黒・白のシグネチャーカラーの文字を組み合わせた彫刻作品を発表。2023年、Van Der Plas Galleryでの展覧会「Words, Objects, Notions」は、この変化を象徴する展示となりました。

2023年には、俳優アンジェリーナ・ジョリーがニューヨーク・マンハッタンに開設したファッションブランド「Atelier Jolie」に関連するプロジェクトにも参加。同施設は、かつてアンディ・ウォーホルが所有し、ジャン＝ミシェル・バスキアが居住・制作していた歴史的建築であり、AL DIAZはその文脈を継承する形でSAMO©スタイルの作品制作や空間演出に携わりました。
AL DIAZは「バスキアの友人」という枠を超え、“ニューヨークの声を視覚化するアーティスト“として、現在も唯一無二の立ち位置を確立し続けています。

About AL DIAZ
AL DIAZ is an American artist widely recognized as a first-generation pioneer of the 1970s New York graffiti scene. He is best known as the co-creator of the legendary graffiti project SAMO©, alongside the iconic artist Jean-Michel Basquiat.

In 1971, at the age of 12, Diaz was introduced to the burgeoning New York graffiti culture through the influence of his cousin, Gilberto “SIETE” Diaz. Washington Heights, where SIETE lived, was a major graffiti hub at the time. It was there that Diaz learned the traditional style of combining a nickname with a number; he began tagging as “BOMB-1,” a name inspired by his explosive personality.

After returning to the Lower East Side, Diaz became so immersed in graffiti that he began skipping school, eventually leaving high school to attend City-As-School, an alternative institution in Brooklyn Heights. During this period, he met Jean-Michel Basquiat at a mutual friend’s house. The two developed a deep friendship and eventually conceived the concept of “SAMO©” as an inside joke. In 1977, they launched the newspaper Basement Blues Press with their peers, and in its spring issue, Basquiat wrote a text centered on a fictional religion called “SAMO.”

About SAMO©
SAMO© is an abbreviation for “Same Old Shit.” It embodied a cynical and rebellious stance toward the mainstream culture, religion, and political systems of the era. While SAMO© began to attract significant attention from the art world, the project came to an end in 1979 due to differing artistic directions between the two creators. The phrase “SAMO IS DEAD” was subsequently left scattered across the streets of New York.

AL DIAZ possesses an extraordinary sensibility for language and lettering, having developed a unique world of expression through the evolution of typography. Since approximately 2016, he has reclaimed the “SAMO©” tag, updating its philosophy as street art within a contemporary context.

As of 2025, Diaz remains active in New York City, using short phrases and symbolic language to provoke interpretation from the viewer. His work merges the spontaneity of graffiti with the conceptual framework of fine art.

Key Activities and Evolution (2015–2025)

The Revival of the SAMO© Tag (2016–Present)
Around the time of the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election, Diaz began reusing the SAMO© tag. He updated his past philosophical statements to critique contemporary political chaos, consumerism, and cultural decay.

The “WET PAINT” Series and Anagrams (2015–Present)
Diaz continues to create collage works by cutting and reconfiguring letters from New York City subway “WET PAINT” signs. Through humorous, ironic, and sometimes poetic anagrams, he subverts the meaning of institutionalized language. Notable works include “Because War is just a 3 Letter Word” (2019) and “Tolerate Civilization” (2019).

Development into 3D and Geometric Expression (2020s–Present)
In recent years, Diaz has expanded beyond 2D works into three-dimensional pieces inspired by “Sacred Geometry.” He has released sculptures that combine geometric forms—such as triangles, circles, and squares—with lettering in his signature colors of red, black, and white. His 2023 exhibition at Van Der Plas Gallery, “Words, Objects, Notions,” was a landmark showcase of this evolution.

Diaz also published the book SAMO©… SINCE 1978, which archives his history as a first-generation graffiti artist, and he frequently gives lectures.

In 2023, he participated in a project related to “Atelier Jolie,” a fashion brand opened by actress Angelina Jolie in Manhattan. The facility is located in the historic building once owned by Andy Warhol, where Jean-Michel Basquiat lived and worked. Diaz contributed to the space’s design and created SAMO©-style works, honoring the site’s historical context.

AL DIAZ has established a unique and enduring position that transcends being just “a friend of Basquiat.” He continues to be an essential artist who visualizes the voice of New York.
