SH GALLERYでは韓国で注目されてる若手作家の1人である、アン・ヒョンジョンの個展を開催致します。

アン・ヒョンジョンが創り出す抽象画は、凝縮された形はシンプルだが、同時に多様な複雑さを描き出している。正体不明の現実の下に沈められた記憶と感情は、単調で人を寄せ付けないが、それにもかかわらず、和やかな形で浮かび上がってくる。曲線と直線が収束して平面を構成し、それが分割されて幾何学に変化し、さらに別の平面を作り出す。リネンとキャンバス・コットンのハーモニーと並ぶ縫われたフォルムは有機的である。ニューヨークでの長い生活が作品に変化をもたらし、アンは抽象への展開を追求した。平面に描かれたものは、画風としては抽象的といえるかもしれないが、作家の人生を踏まえた作品の解釈には、現在、過去、社会など、さまざまな物語が含まれている。海外で過ごした時間は、画家を不慣れな環境に置き、画家は未曾有の経験を積み、新しい社会に適合することで、自己の内面を発見することができた。多くの留学生が経験するような、言葉の壁を経験する外国人としての現実と、外国人としての社会化のプレッシャーが作品制作の原動力となった。

作家は絵画の中の形を取り除き、抽象性を取り入れることで、誰もが作品を理解できるようなコミュニケーションの扉を開いた。縫うことで生まれる緊張感が拘束と柔軟性を統合し、徐々に現れてくることをアンは予期している。曲線と直線を含む平面は、さりげなく開放的なニュアンスを描き、作家の抽象化は、関係性の中の表面を呼び起こし、結果的な感情を活性化させ、記憶を色に表現するという現象を反映している。表面の緊張が接合点としての線を作り出し、色面のエッジが飽和し、平面が構成され、作家によって描かれた線がバランスをとる。モザイクのように並置された絵画は、それぞれの作品とのコミュニケーションモードを導き出し、そのバランスは一見インスタレーションのような雰囲気を醸し出す。

最後に、不確実性と混迷の時代に、作家自身のために創造され、吹き込まれた確信であるという作家の言葉を強調したい。人間の存在は不確実性と混迷に従うものではあるが、作家は不確実性と混迷の時代を支えるために、たとえ幻想であっても内なる秩序の実践を選んだのである。作品は、作家の過去の海外生活体験から引き出されたものであり、それは作家に限ったことではない。穏やかでありながら逞しく、シンプルでありながら洗練されたフォルムを確立することで、個々の感情が顕在化している。それはおそらく、内的秩序の最も明確な表現を暗示している。

The abstract that Hyun Jung Ahn creates is simple in its condensed form, but it simultaneously portrays manifold complexity. Memory and emotion submerged under unidentifiable reality are monotonous and inhospitable, nevertheless, they emerge in an amicable form. Curved and straight lines converge to compose a plane surface, which transforms into geometry in a divided formation, then creates another plane surface. Forming a composition simple yet delicate across the canvas surface, the sewn form alongside a harmony of linen and canvas cotton is organic. The artist’s long years of life in New York inspired a change in the work, and Ahn pursued development into abstraction. Although what has been depicted on the plane surface is perhaps regarded as abstract in terms of the painting style, the interpretation of the work based upon the life of the artist involves a multitude of narratives that consider the current, past times, and society. The times spent abroad put the artist in an unfamiliar environment where the artist was able to discover their inner self through gaining unprecedented experiences and conforming to a new society. The reality as a foreigner who experiences a language barrier commonly struggled like many international students in an abroad country, and the pressure of socialization as an alien motivated the development of the work.

The artist removed forms in the painting and embraced abstraction to open doors of communication for anyone to comprehend the work. Ahn anticipates a gradual manifestation as the tension created through sewing integrates restraints and flexibility. A plane surface that contains curved and straight lines portrays casual and open nuance, and the artist’s abstraction reflects the phenomenon in which the abstraction evokes the surfaces in relationships, revitalizes consequential emotion, and the memory is rendered into colors. As the tension on the surface creates the lines as a junction, the edges of the color surface are saturated, the plane surface is composed, and lines drawn by the artists make balance. The juxtaposition of paintings like mosaic derives a communication mode with each piece, and its balance seemingly creates an installation-like ambiance.

 

Lastly, I would like to emphasize on artist’s statement that says the certainty is created for the artist’s own sake and infused in the times of uncertainty and confusion. Albeit the existence of humans complies with uncertainty and confusion, the artist chose the practice of the inner order, even if it is a mere illusion, to sustain the era of uncertainty and confusion. The works were drawn from the artist’s past experience of abroad life, and this is true of not only for the artist. The individual emotion is manifested through the establishment of a form that is gentle yet robust and simple yet sophisticated. It perhaps implies the most definite representation of the inner order.

アン・ヒョンジョンは韓国ソウル出身で、ブルックリンを拠点に活動するマルチディシプリナリーアーティスト。作品を通して、彼女は “心の形 “と呼ぶ謎めいた抽象的な形を探求している。彼女は、感情、個人的なつながり、感情的な状態をとらえた視覚的な日記から描くことから始める。そして、これらの概念をミニマルなドローイング、絵画、彫刻に変換する。ラ・メール・ギャラリー（韓国、ソウル）の「Emerging Young Artist」に選ばれ、バディット・アート（イタリア、トスカーナ）の「Emerging Art Award」を受賞。バーモント・スタジオ・センター（ジョンソン、VT）、MASS MoCA（ノース・アダムス、MA）、トレッスル・アート・スペース（ブルックリン、NY）などのレジデンスに参加。現在、ブルックリンとソウルを拠点に活動している。

Hyun Jung Ahn is a Brooklyn-based multidisciplinary artist from Seoul, South Korea. Through her work, she investigates enigmatic abstract forms, which she references as “shapes of mind.” She begins by drawing from her visual diary, which captures feelings, personal connections, and emotional states of being. She then translates these notions into minimalistic drawing, painting, and sculpture. Ahn was selected as the ‘Emerging Young Artist’ at La Mer Gallery, Seoul, South Korea, and was the winner of the Emerging Art Award at Baditto Art, Tuscany, Italy. She has attended residencies including Vermont Studio Center, Johnson, VT, MASS MoCA, North Adams, MA, and Trestle Art Space, Brooklyn, NY. Ahn Graduated from Duk-Sung Women’s University, Seoul and received her M.F.A in painting and drawing from Pratt Institute and currently lives and works in Brooklyn and Seoul.
